I do not use this account for anything; I do not post to it, I do not post comments with it. This will not be changing. If you would like to follow me, I am
niqaeli on Dreamwidth.
The End.
Perhaps I could just leave it at that, but no, I'm a verbose sort of person. I always want the epilogue and what happens next. So here goes:
I've been thinking it over since the latest debacle and I do not think I can continue to use LJ. Not even using my OpenID, not even just to follow people.
This means I will be cut off from the planning space for part of my offline social circle. This means there are several friends I do still really care about keeping up with that I cannot keep up with if they remain solely LJ users. This means that I am walking away from supporting people I know who still care about the site and its potential and what it might have been and what, if the fuckery stopped, it still could be; people who are trying to turn it around, who are fighting the excesses and ameliorating the stupidity.
But I find I can't support the site. I can't use the site. I don't feel safe. It's the malware that I am at risk for without my adblock, it's the utter failery and refusal to acknowledge my people (the fannish, the queer, and hell just the users period), it's the consistent obfuscation of their actions and motivations. I have less than no faith left in the management.
This is not me saying you should make the choice I am making, per se. I do think you should think hard about LiveJournal and the company and if you can support the site even to use it. You should make that decision consciously and not out of inertia.
But while I will certainly respect whatever decision you make regarding your use of LiveJournal (to cease use, to maintain dual citizenship, or to stay solely on LiveJournal), I will not use LiveJournal. This is, apparently, when and where I draw my last line. If you still care to follow me and do not wish to use Dreamwidth to do it, you may syndicate an RSS feed off my Dreamwidth and follow it in whatever manner you wish. I have made it very easy for you to comment here; OpenID and anonymous commenting are both permitted. If you care to have me continue to follow you, you're going to have to be part of an online community that isn't LiveJournal. I won't use the site. I won't read RSS feeds off the site. And when cross-site reading lists hit here on Dreamwidth, I will not follow your posts on LiveJournal. I will not give a company I have no respect left for even that much of my time and attention and energy.
For the record? Dreamwidth makes cross-posting from their interface incredibly simple -- you can set it up to be automatic. And if you are not comfortable with Dreamwidth storing your LiveJournal password, there are clients that allow you to cross-post. I still have invite codes aplenty.
If you'd like to establish a presence here, that's wonderful. And if you have an off-LJ presence, then let me know and I'll follow the RSS feed from that off-LJ presence.
LiveJournal, you were a place I loved very dearly once. But times and people and places change, and while nostalgia and my emotional ties to others who still live there kept me haunting you for much longer than otherwise would have been the case, you are no longer a place that I find I can be. Not even to haunt in passing.
Goodbye, LiveJournal. Safe journey wherever you take yourself next -- may it be a better place than you've been of late.
